Knope Provost’s Distinguished Associate Professor, Georgetown University Karah was born and raised in Michigan. She attended Lake Forest College (IL) where she earned her B.A. in Chemistry. During her time at Lake Forest College, Karah performed summer and honors thesis research in a synthetic inorganic chemistry group – this piqued her interest in inorganic chemistry and crystal chemistry. However, unconvinced that it was inorganic chemistry and not research itself that she wanted to pursue, she headed west to work in a psychiatric research lab at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center following graduation. Drawn back to chemistry, in 2003 she made a cross-country trip to the University of Vermont, where she spent the next two years studying the blood coagulation cascade in a biochemistry research group. The conclusion from these experiences – Inorganic Chemistry was it! In 2005, she began her graduate work at The George Washington University (DC), where she worked with Christopher Cahill. Her thesis focused on the synthesis and characterization of hexavalent uranium coordination polymers. After receiving her Ph.D. in 2010, she began her postdoctoral work in the Heavy Elements Chemistry and Separation Science group at Argonne National Laboratory, where she examined the chemical behavior of Th, U, and Pu. In 2012 she was promoted to an Assistant Scientist. The USA Science and Engineering Festival is the largest and only national science festival. The mission of the festival is to “stimulate and sustain the interest of our nation’s youth in STEM by producing and presenting compelling, exciting, and educational STEM events and programs.” In the past, we have worked with Georgetown undergraduates as well as national organizations (i.e. American Chemical Society, American Nuclear Society) to deliver hands-on activities related to chemistry and nuclear science and engineering. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Knope group participated in the Alexandria City Public School Global Science night. We developed activities focused on luminescent materials and radioactivity.
